Glassy Rim Texture The Image below shows a “glassy” rim on a pillow lava. The glass is a type of basaltic obsidian (felsic obsidian is also common). The glass forms when hot lava comes into contact with a cold surrounding, instantly crystallising the outer most layer of lava. The glass is not commonly preserved in the geological record as the elements that make it degrade to clay minerals.
