When mother sent me to camp for introverted boys with self esteem issues, I was shocked to find a space filled with boys, that were more like girls, often visibly so. With pink decorum and posters of muscular men with their shirts off throughout the dorms.The first night I was appalled by the initiation the other new boys were subjected to, in line before me. All new boys (the “new girls”) had to kiss, and for almost all, it would be their first time kissing another boy.When I arrived, I was so adamant that I wasn’t like that, and promised myself, that I was never going to be like them. But, the first time then I experienced what it was like to kiss a boy, like with everyone else there, things changed. All of us new to camp, delirious, ending up kissing, all evening, all night in bed and again in the morning up until roll call. It was one thing about that camp, seemingly boys were kissing everywhere, when they had the opportunity out of sight of the adults.By the end of summer, surveying the poster of a shirtless muscular men, that had come to hang above my bed, I worried seeing my friends again back at home.
