I wanted to share a multi-page graphical timeline I came up with for a visual look at the evolution of the scabbard and more specifically the harness. To the best of my knowledge these are accurate to the date and are a small part of a rather large collection I have put together over many years. I often get asked, and see questions asked within the community what & when in regard to scabbard types. Keep in mind that this timeline is small in scale and is meant to give an understanding of interpretation as to when a scabbard harness type was in period. While there are many images I would have loved to include, image size and information overload would have been an issue.Through the early periods there isn’t much to go on for physical evidence, and what we have to decipher how scabbards were constructed are rudimentary drawings, leaving the analysis open to personal interpretation of construction. As we move forward in time, we started getting effigies to analyze along with better art to get a color visual of the period, and more defined details. In rare cases, we have some scabbards intact, that allow for further analysis of construction. In many cases, we are still left to interpretation as effigies & art don’t often show you everything you need to know. For instance, the back of the scabbard needs to be seen to fully understand a harness. A worn stone effigy often doesn’t explain, either, as materials used can be mis-interpreted. Finally, decoration is often difficult to interpret from effigies, or drawings. Thanks, and I hope these images are informative. Please feel free to share and enjoy. -- source link
