- Refugee CrisisThis blog has never been a photojournalism blog or about current events but this past week I went to the Greek island of Lesvos. This is one of the largest Greek islands off the coast of Turkey where most of the refugees and migrants are passing through (you may have seen it on the news). It’s the island where so many have lost their lives attempting the ocean crossing on small rafts. I know there has been so much debate and dialogue about the refugee crisis. I know many of us cannot make it to directly interact with the refugees. So, I would encourage anyone reading this to not take your opinions solely from a couple news sources. Go and read first encounters from humanitarian aid workers. Go and read blogs of people who have been to and helped at some of the locations where refugees are passing. Go and look at pictures and read the captions on some of the humanitarian aid websites. OR, better yet, go and volunteer somewhere where you can directly interact with some of the refugee population and see for yourself that these are hurting people in need. The island of Lesvos continues to see hundreds and thousands of people arriving by boat and raft every week (120K+ this year already to the Greek Isles). If you are interested in volunteering on the island, most of the organizations would request that you give a minimum of 2 weeks of your time.
