crazy-hair-girl:Today something rather upsetting to me happened. While I was grabing some last minute things for dinner at my local grocery store, wearing this fabulous outfit, I noticed a man looking me over. I chose to ignore him and continued to look for the appropriate crutons to put upon my salad. A minute later, a woman who looked like the man’s wife appeared. They shared a moment of whispering and then the wife turned to me and said “You’re just asking for it you know. Girls like you shouldn’t wear things like that.” Not quite sure I heard that right I replied, “Excuse me?” “Girls that wear things showing off their midriff or legs are the reason we live in such a rape-stipulating society. You should be ashamed of yourself. Men are dogs. They’re only after one thing, and you shouldn’t encourage them by dressing like a prostitute on her day off.” Completely offended, I wasn’t quite sure how to politely tell her to fuck off, but I noticed her husband was still looking at me so I said, “Well if you’re so concerned maybe you should keep your dog on a leash.” Then I grabbed my croutons and stormed off. The fact that that woman even called me out like that is maddening. I was wearing a long skirt and a crop top. How was I perpetuating rape culture? I shouldn’t be ashamed of showing off my midriff and no other women should either! A similar thing happened to me at school which I posted hered on my blog. I was punished for wearing shorts. Women should be celebrated for having the confidence to show off any body parts. Being confident enough to wear a crop top in public and saying “Who cares what anyone thinks! I’m beautiful!” Is an amazing accomplishment for a woman, especially an insecure teenager like me; confidemce shouldn’t be shunned! The fact that people have the nerve to say that “girls like you” are the reason that rape occurs so much in our society is disgusting. The people who say that are the real problem! If you are sexualizing young ladies, you are the real issue. Young women (women of all ages) should be allowed a right to dress as they please without discrimination or judgement. Clothing is a part of freedom of expression and shouldn’t be looked down upon. -- source link
