“The Sons and Daughters. Tucumán , Twenty Years Later” by Julio PantojaThe series “The Sons and Daughters. Tucumán , Twenty Years Later” by Julio Pantoja references a tumultuous period in Argentina’s history in the late 1970s and early 1980s under the direction of General Antion Bussi.A military operation was launched to silence the guerrilla groups in Tucumán Province, but it was later used to repress union workers, political activists, and students.During this period, more that 350 people “disappeared,” and many others were tortured. In 1995 Bussi was elected governor of Tucumán, and as a response, Julio Pantoja created a series that would remind people of Bussi’s past; the project portrayed children whose parents disappeared in Tucumán during the last dictatorship (1976-83).The series is on view now as part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time LA/LA exhibition titled Photography in Argentina.
