At the college I went to, the cafeteria (more like a mall food court) would do a weekly “$2 pasta bar.” One plate, which you could pile with as much pasta and sauce as you wanted, and could carry away with you, for two bucks. As starving college kids, this was a godsend. It became even better when one of us realized that the romaine lettuce leaves they used could be arranged into a broad ring of leaves that would allow you to pile more pasta onto your plate. The next week, the salad bar switched to chopped iceberg salad. And thus the pasta wars began. My friends and I next discovered that the spaghetti could be piled up even higher if you carefully twirled it just so, and it would allow you to create a stack of spaghetti about a foot high, against the lip of the plate, and that the parmesan cheese and sauce could act as a binder. The cafeteria responded by switching to flimsier plates, so you couldn’t stack up as much pasta. Undaunted, we continued to build more and more elaborate pasta structures until the cafeteria finally switched to bowtie pasta, which is much harder to stack up than spaghetti, and the war came to a begrudging end. -- source link
