I knew that I - Melissa’s boss for god’s sake - couldn’t be “beta” to her, to my new, distressingly young, overly underqualified Office Manager. I had to exert myself as her employer…and as a man, goddamnit. I came down to meet her for breakfast before classes. I walked into the same outdoor restaurant at the resort we had dined at last night in another pair of too-big shoes and yet with the best of intentions, a set mind. But any thoughts I had of reestablishing my authority quickly evaporated when I saw her enter, strut casually to the table in her wedge-heeled cork sandals, and begin to sit down.
