A few years back, I posted a strip with the line: Presidents go to war. It’s part of the job!It is, you know. Presidents go to war. Not all of them, certainly, but we live in a brutal world and there are many opportunities to practice our worst natures. We have a history of Presidents who are strong but also kind, and who recognize that lives hinge on their decisions. In the comic, Lincoln has been hurting since the beginning of the Civil War: he knows the war was necessary, but he feels the weight of a million decisions that could have alleviated some of the grief. As those decisions were his to make, he’s been lost in self-doubt and pain.I believe all Presidents should be as noble. They should move through their time in office knowing their actions have consequences. Even if they will never know our names, they should decency of conscience to recognize those who are dead, dying, and suffering. This may be a timely post. -- source link
