morbidology: In 1967, Katherine Switzer entered the Boston Marathon as the gender neutral name, K.V. Switzer. She was the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry. Jock Semple, the race organiser, chased her after realising a woman was running, shouting “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners protected her during the entire marathon. These photographs taken of the incident made world headlines. -- source link
