Magna Mater, Anatolian Mother Goddess Figurine, Çatalhöyük, 5750 B.C., Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, AnkaraMonth of March is honored as Women’s History Month in the United States. I decided this would be a great opportunity to celebrate Women throughout the ages as I have encountered them in my art historical journey. The earliest Stone-Age sculpture of the Mother Goddess figure found in Anatolia was found in Çatalhoyuk depicting a female figurine associated with fertility and agriculture. A figurine with huge breasts and wide hips sits on a throne between two leopards, giving birth. Anatolian Mother Goddess, Cybele, associated with the powerful female forces of the universe is thought to have derived from this type. -- source link
