Here’s another rating to help out @somewillwin.Before I begin, I want to mention that I am a white cis lesbian woman in my early thirties. Keep that in mind while reading my assessments.Story (2/5) - Let’s face it, the plot of the series is not a selling point. At all. Especially once we get to junior and senior year. I really can’t think of any plot points that I actually care about. The story as a whole is just boring. Not terrible. Just… boring.COC Treatment (4/5) - Three of the five main love interests are POC. And three of the five core roommates (not counting MC) are POC. I think we can all agree that Tyler and Abbie could have been handled better, but in general, this series seems to do well by COC.Female LI Treatment (5/5) - While the ratio isn’t perfect (3 male to 2 female LIs), it’s better than most Choices books. And Kaitlyn and Becca are both stand-out LIs, in my opinion. Kaitlyn’s coming out story is so poignant and gut-wrenching, and it’s amazing that she gets to actually verbally identify as a lesbian. Becca starts out as a cliche mean girl villain, but soon undergoes what I think is a realistic and compelling journey toward friendship and self-worth. Both characters are important to the plot as a whole, and their romance arcs are just as meaningful as the men’s ones (I assume, having only tried Zig once, and the others not at all). Friend Group (5/5) - Honestly, if this were just about the core roommates, I might not have rated this as high. I felt like I outgrew Zach and Tyler pretty quickly, and I even struggled to bond with Abbie after a while (though this is probably because she was mishandled and barely given personality outside of her relationship with Tyler). What I really like about the series is the vast array of other stand-out side characters, like Madison or Amara or even Sebastian. The MCs larger group of college friends is what makes the series special to me.Wardrobe (3/5) - This is also going to be a tricky category for me to rate, because I generally don’t care about the clothes in these books. I will say, I do like the outfits in the first few books of the series, before the closet and diamond clothes were introduced. Other than that, nothing stands out here for me.Main Character (3/5) - The MC in this series is only so-so for me. I’m not into the bubbly, meddling, has to be involved in everything sort of character, personally. Also, I don’t really like any of the MC faces, but that’s more of a shallow reason.Love Interests (5/5) - The romance options in this book are outstanding. Each is unique, with a compelling story to go with them. And while it’s true that some options are ridiculously forced in the first two books (looking at you, Chris), the series is actually very good at allowing you to choose someone early on, and not forcing other people on you after that point. You really feel like you’re actually dating that person, and no one else is trying to get in on that against your wishes. I’ve heard that you can even go the single route, if you want to. Which is very cool indeed. Diamond Choices (3/5) - I have bought very few diamond choices in this series (mostly a few Becca scenes to kick off her romance). The few that I’ve bought have been good, but nothing spectacular. I feel like the diamond scenes would be a treat if you were really into one LI or another, but otherwise they’re unnecessary. And that works fine for me.Final Assessment (3/5) - Overall, this series wouldn’t rank as one of my favorites. It’s really hard to plod along through the terrible plot sometimes. But it’s helped along by it’s fantastic love interests and other side characters. -- source link
