It’s a beautiful movie and really made me interested in the cultures it was inspired by, but then I see people telling me I shouldn’t name my kid after the characters or get a simple tattoo. I know it’s their culture and history, and I can respect that, I just feel so isolated and discouraged from celebrating a culture that is so beautiful and historically rich.” question: where does cultural appreciation end and appropriation begin then When you start claiming that you invented something, or at a minimum don’t give credit. It’s about respect more than anything else really. …hmm That’s because they are an outsider? It’s good to be inspired but be inspired to do some research and get active in supporting the Pasifika community. I can’t speak for the rest of the Pacific and Kanaka Maoli (and other Pasifika individuals should and can correct me) but in Hawaiʻi, names hold importance in a way that I find a bit difficult to explain culturally. Not only that, it does bother a lot of people here that locals who aren’t Hawaiian and non-Hawaiians in general take up Hawaiian names. To that extent, traditional Pasifika tattoos are also incredibly important and carry a lot of cultural weight and symbolism. I have had my Kumu Hula (Hula Teacher) whose line goes to Mary Kawena Pukui (which, if you’re from the islands know that Mary Kawena Pukui is an important individual to the Hawaiian community), complain about how local kids who weren’t Hawaiian were getting funny kine tattoos that weren’t even Hawaiian but also that it was disrespectful because they neither earned it nor knew what they were getting. Coming from Hawaiʻi, not being able to take a Hawaiian name or get Kakau (Hawaiian traditional tattoos) does not discourage me from celebrating and actively loving where I come from and respecting Kanaka Maoli culture. You do not need to force your way into someone’s culture to celebrate it. -- source link
