violesense: Murder Of Megan Kanka On July 29th, 1994, 7-year-old Megan Kanka left her Mercer County, New Jersey, home to go ride around on her bicycle. Later on in the day, Megan’s family found her abandoned bike on their front lawn and immediately began searching for her. The following day, Megan’s lifeless body was discovered in Mercer County Park, where it was revealed that she had been sexually assaulted before being strangled. Many began to suspect one man, a convicted sex-offender who lived across the street from Megan. Upon being arrested, Jesse Timmendequas confessed to the murder, admitting that he had lured Megan to his home, raped her, and then strangled her with a belt. In light of all the tragedy, Megan’s family was able to instill a law, which is commonly called ‘Megan’s Law,’ where a person convicted of a sex-crime must inform his/her neighborhood about them moving in, either it be through mail or door-to-door introduction. Megan’s family remains adamant that had they known about Timmendequas’s past, there daughter would still be alive. -- source link
