fuckyeahhistorycrushes:I submit for my crush Charles Hardin Holley aka Buddy Holly.Born September 7, 1936, Died in a plane crash with Richie Valens and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson on February 3, 1959Here’s a guy who’s short life and career changed music forever. Before him it was unusual for the big time singers to write their own music. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, they mostly did songs written by others. Are You Lonesome Tonight for instance is an old Tin Pan Alley song from the 1930s. Sure, a few musicians composed their own music but they were few and far between. Holly created his own special sound, a combo of rock and roll and country called rockabilly. On top of that he and his band, The Crickets, are the inspiration behind some music greats. Ever hear of a little band called The Beatles? Yeah, they’re big time Holly fans. (I don’t know how to look it up to confirm it, but apparently Paul McCartney owns all the copyrights to Holly’s songs.) Don McLean composed the song American Pie about the deaths of Holly, Valens, and Richardson. The Day The Music Died, yeah, that was February 3rd, 1959. Bruce Springsteen has been quoted as saying, “I play Buddy Holly every night before I go on - it keeps me honest!” Even Bob Dylan loves Buddy Holly’s music. He and Norman Petty composed what I believe to this day is the most beautiful love song in the world, True Love Ways. There are those that believe had Buddy lived he would’ve eventually unseated Elvis Presley as The King Of Rock-N-Roll. Buddy Holly is one of my big time music history crushes. The other is Sammy Davis Jr. But he’s another story. -- source link
