It doesn’t matter where it is, or what we’re doing, but that first time we meet eyes and pause, and let that gaze linger, there’ll be something there. Nothing as hokey or clichéd as electricity, or a sudden bolt of knowledge. This isn’t a movie. These things don’t happen like that. It’s far more ambiguous than that. It’s just an acknowledgement that there's something. Just that. That’s enough. It’s the seed that can grow into a tree, or wither and become so much fertiliser. It’s up to us to decide which way that goes, up to one, or the other, to embrace the bold and make that first step. Force an introduction. Because something is enough. Not some of the time, not occasionally. Something is always enough. It’s enough to know yes, or no, at the very least. To know whether there’s a conversation there, a shared smile, a laugh from you, a poor joke from me. This is fast becoming a pep talk for myself, the kind that runs through my head before I make that first move, the rushed words that attempt to drown out the cacophony of pessimism that floods the system, always. It’s a cacophony because it’s rare that we’re presented with a decision that has such an immediate binary outcome. To know, within moments of acting, whether you’ve got a good result, or complete rejection, isn’t something that we come across all that often. And, ironically enough, that’s not something that we really want. It’s much easier to take an action if you won’t know about the results for a while. You’re safe from the consequences, shielded from the bad, or the good. But we are the reckless, the bold, the already courageous. We've made our bed. We’ve decided to look inwards, and actually find out about ourselves. We know, more than most, what has settled in our hearts. And to make that choice, and yet to let this pass, that something, whatever it may be, would be dishonest. So I’ll step up to you, and you’ll keep an open mind. And maybe something will lead to something else. -- source link
