reflectionsonmodernphilosophy: Edinburgh has a famous statue of David Hume. I visited this past summer to find that the statue’s toe is gold; I learned that visitors rub Hume’s big toe for good luck. It’s ironic, since Hume himself would probably hate the idea that causation existed between rubbing his toe and having good luck … but nonetheless, I too rubbed Hume’s toe. I took the other photos on the other side of Edinburgh; they are of Hume’s grave. I thought that this was ironic, like the toe. Although the grave is technically Hume’s family’s grave, I approached to find that there is a very Christian inscription on the grave. Again, not what you’d imagine for the “infidel.” Between the toe and the grave, Edinburgh loves their Hume, even if they don’t know how to properly honor him in congruence with his philosophy after his death. -- source link
