Halloween Series: Goddesses of Death & Magic ✨Persephone (Περσεφονη meaning ‘Bringer of Death’) was the goddess queen of the underworld and wife of the god Hades (god of the dead) in Greek mythology. She was once the goddess of spring and worshipped alongside her mother Demeter (goddess of the grain). Once upon a time when Persephone was playing in a flowery meadow with her Nymph companions, she was kidnapped by Hades and carried off to the underworld as his bride. Her mother Demeter despaired at her disappearance and searched for her throughout the world accompanied by Hecate (goddess of magic) bearing torches. When she learned that Zeus (king of the gods) had conspired in her daughter’s abduction she was furious, and refused to let the fruits of the earth grow until Persephone was returned. Zeus consented, but before she was released, Hades tricked her into eating six pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return for six months each year. When Demeter and her daughter were together, the earth flourished with vegetation. But for six months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm.(Elie Saab Fall 2017 Haute Couture Collection) -- source link
