Even before Marly was born, they knew she was going to be sick. It was halfway through her mother’s pregnancy that Mrs. Ness found out her daughter was going to be born with a heart condition that would probably claim her life before she turned fifteen years old. Wanting only to help their daughter live a longer life, they moved to New York while Mrs. Ness was still pregnant and had their daughter there. She was kept in the ICU at the best cardiology hospital in the country for six months before she was finally allowed to come home. That was when the real work began. Because her heart was not strong enough, Marly had to be on oxygen constantly. She rarely ever went to school and had very few friends because of her illness. By the time she was ten years old, she’d already had four open heart surgeries and was bound to have more. The only question was if her body would be able to take that kind of a strain any more than it already had. As Marly grew, she became rebellious. Her illness kept her inside and unable to do much constantly. She was always in the hospital or bed-ridden and more than once she snuck out, trying to see what a life outside of the clutches of her illness would be like. She was caught more than once because she had an attack or her parents found her out of bed and finally she had to put a stop to her nightly excursions both because it was a hazard to her health and because she was getting in trouble with the law every time her parents called the police when they couldn’t find her. The one thing Marly enjoyed doing was drawing and painting. She became quite good at it, being hospitalized and locked in her room constantly and, by the time she was 15 had already won several awards for her art. To everyone’s surprise, Marly lived past 15. She lived past 16 and 17 and 18 as well. Now Marly is 19. She still lives with her parents because of her illness and because, even with the commissions she receives for her art, she wouldn’t have enough money to pay for an apartment and hospital bills. Though she has been told every year now since she turned fifteen that she only has one year left to live, this year Marly knows that’s the truth. She’s getting worse. The attacks come more frequently and she’s spending more time in the hospital. She wants to live longer, but, at the same time, the thought of finally dying of finally no longer being in pain appeals to her. She has lost all hope of ever being cured, but she keeps this to herself and tries to live her life as fully as she possibly can. The last thing Marly wants is to die with regrets.
