Hiraeth Creature #1179 - Cor-Gigata“Explorers of the Great Betwixt have spoken of a nebulous beasts rising from the sands and accosting whichever unfortunate adventurer woke them from their rest. A floating creature with flesh as hard as steel, coated in a random scattering of eyes, venting out fiery vapours and lashing with oddly placed limbs. At first, many thought these were some kind of bizarrely crafted earth elementals from the Undercroft, looking to protect areas of the Betwixt from outsiders, but their origins are actually more corporeal and much more visceral. These floating anomalies are actually giant hearts reanimated by the magic of the Betwixt by accident. Usually bringing such things to life is more of a practice of taboo magic users who dabble in manipulating souls, such a litches or the ancient witch covens, but the fertile magic flowing through the world-spanning ravine have committed these rituals through coincidence. Giants, powerful behemoths that they are, prove quite difficult to slay, and their bodies born of primordial starlight linger on in strange ways. Giant bones are said to turn into trees over time, and their hearts, carrying all their untamed wildness and fury, never seem to fade away, becoming hard as stone. Many sink into the earth, looking to sleep in peace, but the Betwixt’s magic has acted as a catalyst to their revival, transforming them into an almost new kind of entity. When the Ravenous Beast rose from the west and began the Giant’s March, many of her bewitched soldiers were slain all across Hiraeth, so it’s impossible to know how many may of them ended up on the fault line of the Betwixt, or if such a phenomena could happen along a strong enough leyline— the arcane roots that anchor Hiraeth’s magic. Individuals documented have shown unique characteristics in terms of size, colouration, and amount of energy expelled, each believed to be from a different species of giant. It is understandable that after the fates of their host, these new beings hold an untamed ferocity and rage within them, characterized by their vents of celestial flame and their frenzied movements when encountering the folk of Hiraeth. An unconventional form of ghost, spirits do their best to judge their presence, ignoring them when docile and intervening when their outbursts get out of hand. We have yet to see if these new beings will find a place in the world or if they are a dire reminder of Hiraeth’s grievous past.” -- source link
