Everyone else seemed to have gone to the community pool or had stayed at home. The air was so hot that it seemed that the ground gave off almost as much heat as the sun beamed down on you. The sight of the mall growing taller in front of you made you sigh in relief. As soon as the bus doors opened you hurried up to the end and stepped off. The temperature difference was refreshing but lasted momentarily and almost immediately you found yourself practically melting in the carpark. Hurrying to the doors you stepped through. The chill of the large buildings air conditioning crasessed the bare arms of your shirt, your long shorts allowed for the breezes of the air conditioning to tingle up your legs. Strolling leisurely you waved to a few familiar faces, stopped at a few stalls that took up the long clean corridors filled with bustling people. When you reached Scoops Ahoy you smiled.“Here yet again. You know you could get better ice cream from the store at the other end of the food court. They do it by the litre and it’s cheaper.” Robin said. You shrugged and looked over at the counter.“I like the service.” You said and she chuckled.“Steve!” She shouted. Steve opened the window in the back, saw you and grinned.“Hey! You’re here.” Steve said as he hurried round to the door.“Who did you think it would be?” You asked as Steve grabbed a paper bowl from the stack and leaned on the glass frame. A throat clearing behind you made you turn. Steve leaned so he could see around you.“Them.” He said as he gestured to the line of children who had gathered behind you. “Give me one second.” Steve set the paper bowl down and gestured to the group. They followed him to the back and out through a side door.“They’ve gotten so tall.” You joked when Steve came back.“They grow so fast.” He said with a playfully wistful tone. “Still trying every flavour?”“Totally!” You said with a bright smile. Steve counted the flavours and stopped over the one next to the flavour you’d had yesterday. “You know there’s a new movie out. It’s showing for the first time this evening, maybe we could go see it?”“I dunno. I’ll probably just head home. I don’t feel like sticking around for a movie.” Steve said as he handed you your scoop and stuck a little spoon in it for you. “Oh. Ok. I’ll see you tomorrow then.” You said trying not to sound disappointed. Steve agreed as he gave you a smile and took the dollar you slid across the counter. “You really like your ice cream don’t you.” Steve said with a smile as he waved you off.As soon as you left Steve turned. Robin was standing behind him with the whiteboard in hands. She had written, in bubble writing, ‘you’re an idiot, she was asking you out on a date.’ Steve stared at the whiteboard before sighing.“No.” He said.“Why do you think she comes in here for ice cream? For twenty dollars she could get a litre of every flavour we carry from the stall by the escalator. It’s not for the overpriced ice cream.” Robin insisted. Steve’s face fell and he closed his eyes for a moment.“She’s been coming every day to see me?” His eyes opened and Robin made a face as if it was obvious.“What’d you think she liked the decor? Go and see if she’s still outside!” Robin shooed Steve out to the front of the store. Steve looked around, catching a glimpse of you walking towards the exit with Nancy.************************You’d been disappointed about missing out on the movie. Nancy had offered to go with you but when you had explained what happened and that you didn’t feel like going, she moved off the subject and onto something she had been investigating. It distracted you while the two of you got lunch to go and went to a grassy area and ate until the heat was too much for either of you. You had headed home and filled your mom in on what happened. While you said you were embarrassed that Steve turned you down she insisted that you should try again when the opportunity came up.A car horn beeped outside. It went off a second time and you curiously went to look out of the window. “Who is it? If that neighbour is…”“No Mom, it’s Steve. Maybe I dropped something at the mall? I’ll go out and see what’s wrong.” You called back to her. She didn’t say anything as you hurried out to Steve’s car.“Hey. I was wondering if you wanted to catch that movie? They have a late showing.” Steve said as he rolled the window down.“I thought you didn’t want to go.” You said quickly.“I urm. Thought about it and decided I wanted to go.” Steve said awkwardly. “Well… Sure. I’ll go ask.” You smiled at him before hurring away. Heading inside you asked to go to the movies. After finding out the pamphlet that had come through the door a few days prior you found the movie you were going to see and promised that it was Steve who would be going with you. After being given change for the phone at the mall doors and promising to call after the movie and let your mom know when you were on your way home you headed back outside.“So looking forward to the movie?” Steve asked as you got into the car.“Totally. My cousin saw it when it first came out. They said it was amazing. They had it two weeks before Hawkins.” You said with excitement. Steve smiled as he turned off your road and towards the mall. You tried to steel your nerves as you took a deep breath and let out a long slow one. Steve kept glancing at you as he drove. There was an awkward silence that started to fill the car that hung there until he parked at the mall. There were a few stragglers dressed up for the late night viewing of the movie heading inside.“I’m glad we’re going. To see the movie. The two of us.” Steve said awkwardly as he parked and looked at you.“Me too.” You replied with equal awkwardness. The two of you stared at each other for a moment before he nodded and opened his door, getting out. You let out a shaky breath and got out as well. Walking to the cinema together you both stayed quiet until you were queueing.“I’m glad…” Steve said but stopped.“It’s nice to hang out together.” You added. You both nodded and were grateful to be called up to the ticket booth.Steve tags:@lisainhell@spiderwebs-blog@gryffindorqueensworld@rockyrascal@twerp8999@lovesanimals0000@big-galaxy-chaos@alexxavicry@daughterofthenight117@sarcasm-n-insomnia@multi-fandom5@justice-for-the-kaldorei@rafecameronswhore@favmeyou@kaylantus@aprilfire18@supernatural-wolfie@yougottalovefandoms@devilslilbabysblog@alwaysadreamingoptimist@love1deandra@archaeologydigit@im-eating-rn@bucketbunny@multifandomwriter56@littlefreakingfangirl@thebookisbtr@gillybear17@bluejaysaysstuff@lchufflepuffcorn@fatherfigured -- source link
