He regularly tries to help them with their love lives. And he’s usually the butt of the joke. The subtext joke is ‘this guy who is clearly smart and driven and capable and well off spends almost all of his free time and a ridiculous amount of effort trying to pick up girls for one-night stands and hangs out in a dive bar.“ His main character arc is about becoming less obsessed with bangin’. It’s an interesting dichotomy. We have academics that will write hacky ridiculous papers about “queer theory” and talk about “Queer culture” and “queer studies,” as a dissenting political and social theorum and practice. But outside a few skirt chasers and perverts, and “Punishment” characters who get comeuppance for being horny assholes that go too far and get their just desserts, the closest thing to social “hyperstraightness” would be tradcons. And we don’t have ‘tradcon’ propaganda the same way and attitude we have for the way many people try and “queer” things, politically. I’m loathe to use the term, but it’s their words, not mine.We don’t have characters in cartoons or comics that are supposed to be the Soviet Realist propaganda icons about merits or representation of heterosexuality. There are characters whose personality incorporates being heterosexual and cis, but that’s not a performative or political thing. That’s just existence. The same as how just because a black character appears on screen, it doesn’t mean they’re inclined or required to be Capital B Buhlack and represent that ‘culture.’But you WILL find people that don’t just want gay characters to sit in chairs and move along the plot. You will find people that want those gay characters to talk about gay issues and gay “community” interests and gay political contemporary topics. And because these people also believe representation is only important for, “underrepresented/oppressed minorities,” and superfluous to detrimental if “majorities” get it, they won’t push for socio-political cishetero iconography. In fact, they despise it, and consider any existence of a cishetero person to be positive representation that’s “overrepresenting” in media and culture. So in a way they’re right. Nobody progressively argues we need more and better specific cishetero rep to “advance and increase the representation of cis and hetero people.” Because that sort of fallacious thinking belongs to class struggle theorists. It’s shit. Those are the real force behind treating being gay in media and culture like it’s an absolute requirement or a sign of discrimination. People that believe everything has to be a class and everything is a demographic that requires visibility in anything that’d be considered cultural. It’s objectively insane.“I don’t WANT my LGBT or PEE OH SEE characters to have the same struggles and flaws and character development. I WANT them to sit there and add nothing to the story and be gay.”Do you fuckers realize that you’re making it EASIER to be bigoted against these characters in media? People like me are sick of us being an afterthought because of you, while people that hate us outright just want you gone because you get in the way and you’re annoying. It’s the fucking worst. I’m not even open about my bisexuality because I’m afraid not of people hating me and thinking me a degenerate but because I’m afraid people will think that is my sole personality trait. Or even worse, fetishize it. We’ve horseshoe’d from LGBT people hiding from fear of being hate crimed to LGBT hiding from fear of being fetishized. Fuck this so much. Writers who make the sexuality of an LGBT character their main/only character trait are weak IMO.Same sex relationships being under represented does NOT give you an excuse to half ass your characters. Especially if they’re supposed to be major. Be the best writer you can be. Frankly Same Sex relationships being underrepresented means that you should put MORE effort into them. Especially if you’re going to claim they’re ‘representation!!1!’.This kind of tokenism is exactly what I’m complaining about when I say some writers think being a minority automatically makes a plotline good. -- source link
