idealisticshoujohearts:damnfandomproblems: When writing gay characters, writers often forget that lgbt people are people first and lgbt second. Thus when writing them, the characters seem unnatural, forced, or shoehorned. Most of the time it’s because we’re being used as marketing tools, but sometimes it’s because people don’t know how to write in lgbt characters without seeming homophobic.Just a piece of advice: Write people. Just write a character, with a personality, traits, a backstory, etc. Being gay doesn’t have to be a part of their overall character, just a trait they have as a person. It doesn’t add or take away from the character, because they are normal. For all the faults with Shiro as the LGBT rep in Voltron (mainly in the marketing department), at least the writers knew how to do that. Even before the reveal he was just a PERSON. Which made it all the more insulting when fans went “show he’s gay by having a girl hit on him and him going SORRY LADIES I LIKE DICKS :D” because stereotyping much? -- source link
