It was a routine check-in. When Lilith offered him a trip through the gate to check in with one of their contacts, mentioning that it’d be some good diplomatic experience for Louise, he’d accepted. The jump into the kingdom of Hyrule was fine. Their meeting with Impa and Joaquin had been nice. He was glad to see his old mentor was doing well and that the kingdom was flourishing under the rule of their queen. Louise had only gotten tongue-tied twice. It was on the way back when things went wrong and Joe remembered why he didn’t like using the Gate. They were spat out not in the familiar basement, but in the middle of a dusty highway with not much in sight. It’d taken them a few hours to get to a town and figure out where they were. Then they figured out when they were.Montana, 1975.After finding the nearest Roanoke drop box they’d gotten some money and ‘borrowed’ a car. They were driving down the road by nightfall and while Joe kept his eyes forward he noticed the road map was shaking in Lou’s hands. He reached over and took her hand in his, bringing it to his mouth for a lingering kiss. Then he dropped their hands to the gearshift with a squeeze.“We’ll be there in no time, honey. Believe it or not, time traveling agents turning up isn’t out of the ordinary.” He said, putting as much easiness and humor in his voice as he could.Louise let out a shaky sigh and nodded. She was staring at the map but kept a firm grip on his hand. Joe started to sing along with a song he vaguely remembered on the radio. He grinned at her and waggled his eyebrows. “It’ll be fun. Experience the culture. Free love and all that, baby.” Louise couldn’t help it and rolled her eyes. “Yea, real groovy.” @the-roanoke-society -- source link
