Large parts of the township in Mbare were destroyed during Operation Murambatsvina which begun in 2005, when the government forcibly cleared slum areas across the country. The UN estimates that 700,000 people were made homeless as a result of the operation. There is a veneer of prosperity in Zimbabwe today where the shops are full and the town’s and city’s busy, but scratch the surface and there’s a country on the edge of drought and a total economic collapse leading thousands of people to protest on the streets of Harare in April 2016.
