[la version française suit] Last week, my new multimedia exhibit / opened at @lagaleriedeluqam as part of @momentabiennale for the exhibit , also featuring work by Carolina Caycedo, Taloi Havini, Ts̱ēmā Igharas, Erin Siddall, Miriam Simun & Eve Tagny. This exhibit is a particularly meaningful one for me, for many reasons. First of all, this is the first time I have brought together a body of work that combines photography, video, textiles, poetry (in English, French & Kreol), a performance & an AR project. I love that my practice is growing further in interdisciplinarity, occupying interspaces through which to articulate a decolonial, trans poetics. / is the confluence where the racialized trans femme body becomes the island, becomes the ocean. In exploring the interstice between the body/island/ocean, I reconfigure colonial mappings of island spaces by giving agency to the is/land/body/ocean as an ancestral femme spiritual force. I am particularly proud of , my new video installation that is projected on a bed of salt on the ground. Salt has been a material I have worked with for many years now, as a substance that is capable of dissolving and crystallizing, a material that bears witness to ocean histories, as symbolizing the sweat of the ancestors who were forcibly displaced to work on sugarcane plantations. - // -î, as a visual, textile and poetic work, is also imbricated with salt. This exhibit is very much a pandemic exhibit. One that had to be reworked, reimagined, readapted over & over.
