penig:Dad called just Silver and me out to Widespot one evening, along with Goldie, Candy, and Third. He said the younger kids wouldn’t get it. Which made me nervous.Turned out, Dad had seen Mama’s ghost! He’d apologized to Mary and Penny for not believing them - he’d always thought Mary was being morbid during pregnancy and Penny’s imagination was running away from her - but she’d gotten right up into his face and he had to believe now. And Mary, who always saw Mama when she was pregnant, was pregnant again. Dad had trusted Mary not to spook herself to death, but now he knew the ghost was real, he didn’t want to take any chances. I think he felt guilty about not taking her seriously before.Back when we first moved here, Mama and Dad had bought the plat across the street, since it was so cheap, and he’d been holding onto it waiting for land prices to rise. Now he’d decided to donate it to the town for a cemetery. And Mama would be the first one in it. So we had a little wake for her.It was good hanging out. We got on a Mama story kick. Silver and the boys kept telling us we had to be making stuff up but I swear, if anything we were toning it down for their innocent ears. -- source link
