Monochrome Week: Contrast is what keeps your black and white images from looking flat; it adds dimension, and dimension can go a long way towards making a photo more engaging. It invites the viewer into the image. But contrast isn’t just important in black and white, and not every photo needs to have a complete range of tones to be an effective image. Some people think that low-contrast means lacking in contrast or associate it with flat. Some also believe that the more contrast there is, the better. I disagree.High-contrast (an extreme range between bright and dark) scenes may confine a viewer’s attention for sure, but a low-contrast (with a narrow brightness range) scene may convey serenity and peace, softness and is characteristic of gentleness and mildness. Creates a feeling of delicacy and lightness. -- source link
