conunundrum: Rare Earth Hypothesis The Rare Earth Hypothesis argues that the origin of life and the complexity of biology is a result of highly improbable combination of astrophysical and geological events and circumstances and therefore, extra-terrestrial life will be near impossible to find in the universe due to these very rare circumstances. The Hypothesis proposes that there is life on Earth due to: Being in the right location in the right galaxy. Orbiting the right distance from the right kind of star. There is a right arrangement of planets in our solar system. We are on a continuously stable orbit. We live on a terrestrial planet of the right size. We have plate tectonics and a magnetic field. Our moon is a large mass. Our atmosphere is just right. We’ve had remarkable triggers for evolution past the bacterial stage. We are at the right time in evolution. All these factors are said to contribute to the world around us, and the reason we as a civilisation are so astounding and rare. However, there are many arguments that oppose the Rare Earth Hypothesis and point out flaws that may arise when discussing this particular topic.
