On voyages water would spoil so sailors would mix the stagnant water with beer or wine to sweeten it. As voyages got longer, the beer and wine would go off so this became impractical. After England conquest of Jamica in 1655, a daily ration of a half pint of rum gradually replaced the beer. The rum was usually given to the sailors neat but this led to other problems as wily sailors would save their rations for a number of days and drink in one go. To cut down on the number of hangovers and disciplinary problems, the rum was mixed with water. Obviously this diluted the rum but had the additional benefit of making the mix spoil faster so sailors couldn’t stockpile it. #neverbetamed #picoftheday #piratefacts #sustainablefashion #veganfriendly #independentbusiness #independentclothing #hipster #hipsterstyle #alt #alternative #adventures #grimsby #grimsbyisgreat #cleethorpes #pirate #pirates https://www.instagram.com/p/CbzGut_ubZv/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
