We caught up with artist @meglionelmurphy for an exclusive interview about her debut New York solo show “Traumatica Dramatica.” The exhibit on view at @untitledspaceny features her most recent series of vibrant, personal and powerful paintings on paper and panel. The painting are inspired directly from Lionel Murphy’s own experience with domestic violence and debilitating PTSD. Each of the artist’s vivid and intricate works explore her personal perspective as well as the historical precedent of emotional and physical violence against women throughout the canon of art history. “The idea of violence haunts me, and I try to etch that subject into even the pinkest of paint,” Lionel Murphy stated of her visceral portraits. In “Traumatica Dramatica,” Murphy depicts a reverence for fragility and humanity while examining questions about whiteness, gender, sexuality, class, pain, sickness, loneliness, and most of all– violence and its haunting memories. The solo exhibition, curated by @indiracesarine, is on view at @untitledspaceny through July 2nd, with an artist reception the Thursday June 10th from 6-9pm Check out the full artist interview online now and scroll through to get a glimpse of this colorful and visceral exhibit!
