Sagenitic fire agateWhile we have described this beautiful form of silica before (see http://tinyurl.com/kxfh644 andhttp://tinyurl.com/on4fthz), I wanted to introduce one of my favourite silly sounding mineralogical worlds. It’s just a bit of jargon, all it means is that the quartz contains acicular (needle shaped) crystal inclusions, such as rutile or tourmaline to name the most common examples found in rock shops. The name comes from the usually acicular mineral sagenite. I’m not sure what these particular inclusions are, but love the way they are enfolded in brown fire agate, with a lovely piece of neat transparent hazy chalcedony in the middle of the piece.LozImage credit: Lysergianhttp://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/cide/152390/Sagenitic -- source link
