She discerned the contemplative religious life after her fiancé died. Yet her true vocation was teaching, which she realized under the guidance of her spiritual director. She believed that to educate would improve the lives of the poor and in spite of severe opposition, she opened a preschool for girls and founded a religious institute of women called the Venerini Sisters.
