I think Rei worked as an exorcist before becoming Sailor Mars; both being hired by people who needed divine intervention, and through her own understanding that something was wrong and needing to go and defeat it. Much like Michiru and Haruka, I think she fought early, weaker versions of the Dark Kingdom’s youma, which is why she knew what to do as soon as she became Sailor Mars. -- source link
