As early as 1861, MEB had wanted to write a story based on Balzac’s PEAU DE CHAGRIN and by 1886 she was already planning to combine Balzac’s themes with others from Goethe’s FAUST … Gerard, a quarter of a century later, was her first effort to realize this idea.
