MerMay day 19| InatSerbia, oh dear me. This country has quuuiiite the polarising reputation in the Balkans- I won’t get into it, simply because it’s really messy. There is also a somewhat ongoing conflict about the disputed area of Kosovo, of which Kosovo claimed independence from Serbia, who refuses to recognise it as a country. Serbians can be a crazy lot, and have a concept called “Inat”- a reckless desire to do something that you’re explicitly told not to. This particular concept has resulted in Serbians of the past choosing death over religion conversion, holding BBQs on rooftops as bombs fell around them and turning up for the annual Belgrade fun run despite the potential death by artillery strike during the NATO retaliation of the Kosovo wars. -- source link
