russbengtson: It was mid-November 1959 when a saxophonist named Ornette Coleman showed up at New York’s famed Five Spot with a plastic horn and his quartet and showed everyone what the avant garde really was. His “The Shape of Jazz to Come” from the same year may have proven a bit ambitious in title, but Coleman’s impact was undeniable. Most of his contemporaries — and many of his would-be successors — are but memories today, as Coleman celebrates his 82nd birthday. And he hasn’t stopped innovating. His live album “Sound Grammar” won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2007. -- source link
