Happy Woodcut Wednesday! These images comes from the German jurist Johann Wolff’s massive two-volume work the Lectionum memorabilium et reconditarum centenarii XVI, printed in 1600 in Lauingen. The work contains a number of early modern prognostications, as well as commentary on historical events. While the woodcuts here might seem strange and whimsical to us, one of Wolff’s early modern readers would be able to pick up on any political and religious commentary held within them. -- source link
