hawthorn-and-ivy: fosterlet: clem3ntin3: I remember being in a big important meeting and somebody very powerful and smart leaned over and whispered to me ‘they’re not any smarter than you, they’ve just been around longer and talk louder.’ I always say, when I started working in my current division, one of the attorneys told me “we’re all faking it; some of us have just been faking it longer.” I’ve fallen back on that a lot. I spend my days talking to judges and lawyers, a group a lot of people would find intimidating, and there’s the same dumbassery present as there is in the general population most of the time. “Just pretend you have the confidence of a middle aged white guy named Chad” is my mantra every time I go into these meetings Okay but this is actually invaluable, and you’ll find that most successful people live in a pretty much constant state of this feeling, known as imposter syndrome. I saw a very relevant and inspirational Ted talk about this recently, highly recommended. -- source link
