Professor Georg Ebers was a German Egyptologist of the late nineteenth century who is most famous for having purchased and studied one of the oldest Egyptian papyri on medicine. The eponymous Ebers Papyrus dates to approximately 1550 B.C.E. and contains many magical recipes and spells to ward off disease. Ebers was also known for his efforts to popularize Egyptology by authoring a number of novels set in Ancient Egypt. The work featured here is a mixture of history and ethnography dressed in brown cloth with black and gilt illustration, a typical Victorian-style pictorial binding. The two-volume set has many intriguing illustrations within its pages as well, and this Egyptian “congress” of felines caught our eye as the kitties engage in a very catlike activity: finding and taking a nap in the sunniest/warmest spot they can find.Images from: Ebers, Georg.
