Aleksandr Gurevich, The Family, 1975. [This painting] it unambiguously created in the style of a Russian icon. Its shape, composition, and figures of mother and child explicitly make this first impression. Still, it is easy to see the difference between it and other works of the same genre. The face of the mother is strikingly Jewish. It is shown against a background silhouette of her maimed husband. His ribs stick out of his exhausted figure and his head is split in half. To his right, along his thin and angular arm, is rendered a line of people moving toward an unknown destination, a symbol of the eternal wandering Jew. The incongruous appearance of Jews in an icon creates an impressive sense of incompatibility for the Jews in Russia. -- source link
