WEEK 16 and 17This week’s blog post is a double! After digging and measuring every pipe in the courtyard, we spent a lot of time creating a very detailed digital model that we’ll be using for the rest of our design and construction process. For our most recent design iterations, our driving concept has been “having a clear separation from the building.” Our main focus this past week was exploring different screen and vine combinations. We’ve looked into various metal options such as, cables, expanded metal, rebar, and wire mesh. Trying to keep the structure as thin as possible to maximize usable ground space, the screen’s structure also has to support a cantilevered walkway for the second floor. We continue to explore the composition of the apertures on each elevation and their environmental advantages. In addition to thinking about the possibilities of the materials and its structure, we’re also examining the climbing habits of assorted vines. The screen design and choice of vine go hand in hand. We have to consider how the vine changes through the seasons and if it is winding, twining, or clinging. We continue to research how the organic and built materials work together to create an atmosphere that appeals to each person who steps into the space. -- source link
