Hello, Tumblr! It has been a while, but as promised, I am here with a brand new project dedicated specifically for and inspired by my Tumblr experience. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I wanted to create a series of paintings to celebrate the years that I’ve been on Tumblr (also the first place I shared my art online), and to spread my gratitude to each of YOU for following, liking, commenting and sharing. So here’s the plan: I’m going to go back into the early days of my Tumblr archives (mostly 2013ish) and select posts to paint over again. This one is an example that I had actually already done – the Goya beans from 2013, and then the Goya hominy for Real Simple Magazine in 2017. I decided to make this my “Thank you, Tumblr” project because most of these earlier pieces were never shared anywhere else besides Tumblr, and my work has grown and changed a TON over the years. I’m not trying to say that my earlier work was bad, or that realism should always be the ultimate goal (not at all – I love my earlier work!) but I do want to show how much style and technique can change in only a few years. For me, I gradually realized that I loved realism and detail, so I started creating more and more of it. But in complete honesty, I feel proud of both of these illustrations because they were both hard for me to make, and they were both authentic to my approach at the time. I’m going to call the series, “Then and Now” and it will include both pairings that I’ve already created, and at least 6 brand new paintings. I’m excited to share it with you all in the coming days and weeks. And if you want to participate and share how your work has changed too, use #MyArtThenAndNow, and we can all be amazed and inspired by how much can change with consistency and practice.Thank you for being my first art community, Tumblr. -- source link
