King Michael of Romania, the last king of Romania, in 1947, the year he was forced to abdicate the throne by the country’s Communist leaders, who had come to power in 1945 following Michael’s successful coup against the Nazi figurehead of Romania, Ion Antonescu. The coup is said to have shortened the war by six months, thus saving hundreds of thousands of lives, but ushered in Soviet rule that resulted in the end of the monarchy and a regime that lasted until the Romanian Revolution of 1989.
