Just this morning I discovered The Bacchus Conservation Project at the North Carolina Museum of Art! The Bacchus is a composite created from of a 2nd century Roman torso, a 1st-3rd century Roman head, and limbs, hair, and leaves from the late 16th - early 17th century. The statue was partially disassembled in the 80′s and 90′s, but in this century it was decided to conserve, reassemble, and interpret the numerous pieces that make up the statue.A photo of the Bacchus from the 1950s with a drawing from the 1830s showing the full statue.
