Monastir is a town on the central coast of Tunisia. It is best known for it’s well preserved Ribat – a formed fortified monastary. The Ribat may be most familiar to some people as one of the filming locations for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. The reason the Ribat is not called an obscure saint’s name is after the Islamic conquest, it was converted into a Ribat. The Arabic term means a small fortification as built along a frontier during the first years of the Muslim conquest of North Africa to house military volunteers. These fortifications later served to protect commercial routes, and as centers for isolated Muslim communities. -- source link
