Nov. 27th, 2019The Lighthouse (2019) . The Lighthouse is almost indescribable in its ultimate form, not because it’s the greatest film of all time, but because one suspects several but indefinite truths about its plot. I will attempt something of a review and interpretation. Two men are helped off at a lighthouse. One is a captain (Dafoe) and the other is his helper (Pattinson’s Ephraim). The movie strikes you aurally as often as it does visually (in both regards it’s among the best of its kind). A tremendous fog horn, whose massive engine is fed continually by Pattinson, is a constant reminder that this film’s setting is a hellscape. On that note, the film moves quickly to get oh-so-many genre tropes behind it: there are no revelations (Ephraim’s criminal past, Dafoe’s tall tales being untruthful) that are left for the end. What is left for the end is a scene in which Ephraim finally calls all this out to the Captain’s face, finally defiant. Yet he ends his tirade by pleading with the Captain for a second chance. . This isn’t a simple fable, however, as the director, Robert Eggers, fills it with clues (inconclusive, all of them) that tip us into the spiritual matter at hand. Here I’ll just confess that I went into the movie (based on the trailers) suspecting a very dark story of devilish brotherhood. I don’t know what Eggers’s views are, exactly, but one can glean from the tone he used in his last film, The Witch (2016) that he goes dangerously close to the devil without flinching. The whole film is a series of paranoias and small horrors that ends with a revelation (a very grim one indeed).
