As the gleaming lights fly through the heavens, it is said wishes can come true and all things magical are heightened and given strength, giving aspiring magic users the confidence to learn new spells or allowing spirits to take on awe-inspiring forms for a night. One shooting star is very much an anomaly in southern Hiraeth, one that is said to run across the ground, crossing over the dunes of the desert at lightning speeds. Red at its heart and leaving a ghostly white trail, it is known by some nomads as the “Rose Star”, a sign of future prosperity. When folk see its light glint on the night horizon, some make a game of chasing after it or trying to race it, though few things compare to the Rose Stars sheer speed.At the heart of this ethereal spectacle is very corporeal creature— known as Ruakogo, few suspect these lumbering herbivores as the real identity for the Rose Stars who can cross the desert in a single night. For Hiraeth’s predators, they often stand their ground, their bulky armour offering extreme defences and weighty attacks, but when stumbled upon by folk or fired at by a hunter, they become rather skittish and choose to flee instead. Many know the nighttime nature of these beasts, and the history the folk of Hiraeth once shared with them. In old tales, it was said the only messengers and exarchs of the ancient God Queen, once ruler of all free peoples, could ride the Rose Stars to do her bidding. These tales claim it was the God Queen herself who had created them, as they weren’t seen before her reign. Whether she discovered them or had a creature magically altered is unknown, but whatever the case the Ruakogo and their nighttime races still enchant to this day. Folks claim to see spirits in ethereal and beautiful forms riding on the back of Rose Stars. Whoever could tame such a beast could traverse the whole world with ease, striding across vast wildernesses every night in a blinding and majestic display.
