obeyme-confessions: Full confession: “eh hello there. I just want to speak out because I’m tired. my friend got bullied because of “whitewashing” Diavolo in one of her artworks, but she didn’t do it. His skin colour was supposed to be lighter because of spotlights (he was a model in that picture), and what? everyone started to blame her, she TRIED to explain what’s what. now I see some artists posting black versions of characters and… I’m confused. why’s everyone happy with that? Isn’t it blackwashing of characters who are canonically white? I just can’t understand. this situation makes my friend feel depressed. It’s not fair.”(A/N: I’m watching notes. Anything that is deemed being shitty to the confessor will/can result in a block. Teach the person, but don’t send hate please) As someone who is African-American, whoever tried to defend their friend’s racism without even so much as trying to educate them as that person’s friend, needs to stop. The fact that Obey Me! included characters of color that we know of (Diavolo, Mammon, Simeon) means a lot as far as making an attempt to diversify and include people from all walks of life. News flash: there aren’t a lot of Black/POC in otome games, anime characters, or even American comic book characters and video games. To even make up the term “black-washing” is shaming people who look like me to imagine any character in our own unique likeliness, and depriving us of enjoying something just as much as Caucasians/non-POC. It saddens and disappoints me that my own generation is keeping racism alive even in something as trivial as a video game, meant to be loosely based on Christian beliefs and mythology, all meant to be taken with a grain of salt. While I’m not blaming the person/ people behind the @obeyme-confessions blog, I am extremely disappointed that they gave someone’s voice on racism a public platform, without thinking about the repercussions and backlash they may face from the community. Like, did y'all even TRY to gently yet sternly educate the person submitting the confession that their friend may be wrong in their thinking? Or just keep to the saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all?” Because that confession should’ve been kept amongst themselves, not for the whole community to judge, hate, and slander those who are involved. Just filter what you guys want to post as confessions sometimes, so the community can have healthy conversation, not…whatever THIS is. People have a right to an opinion, and it’s your choice and responsibility to think about the impact and consequences. Just a suggestion: use your common sense, cuz I know y'all got it. Words are more powerful than you think they are. It’s because of people you that people like me can’t have shit.Or it could just be an Internet troll pulling our chains, but that’s still not ok to use the subject of race as a joke. If you’re that kind of troll, please DO NOT follow me or interact with me. Like at all. -- source link
