The first barred owl re-nesting of 2018 is still a work in progress. This one has been a roller coaster. At the end of last week, we thought that we had found an active nest in a tree that had fallen, so we put up this nest box in hopes that the parents would accept this baby - the parents were very active in the area and watched the placement of the nest box. This didn’t happen. And in the meantime, the re-nesting power couple (Deborah and Patrick) heard babies calling from another area close-by. This clarified why the barred owls were not coming to the nest box - they already had a nest! [Meaning the nest in the fallen tree was most likely old.] The baby, patient #21419, is now at CRC while we work to locate the actual active nest. Weighing in at 166 grams, it’s only about 7 days old. We hope to get him back out in the wild soon! -- source link
